how to meditateThe best weight loss meditation techniques to lower stress and eating urges. Understanding that meditation is the great stress reducer is the first step. This is key because stress and eating go together for most people. Meditate to relieve the stress and you start to eliminate the urge to eat. That's how it works.

how to meditateWe've all been there. Plowing our way to the bottom of an ice cream carton or bag of chips (and that’s just to start) to take the edge off.

Problem is, the food binge just puts massive amounts of unburned calories into our bodies that soon turn into fat, and the stress is still there. We lose both ways.

But lucky you weight loss meditation is a stress reduction break that you can practice anytime. At home, on the bus, at work, the waiting room...get the picture.

It's simple, inexpensive, and doesn't require any special equipment. With some practice you can produce a sense of calm, peace and emotional stability in as little as a few minutes.

Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years. Originally, learning how to meditate was to help people understand the sacred and mystical forces of life. Today, you can use it relax and break your cycle of stress related eating. Do that and you’re on your way to losing weight.

Use meditation to sweep away the overload of information that is dumped on you every day. You learn to clear your mind and get into the here and now, not your ever-growing to-do list.

There’s no right or wrong way to practice weight loss meditation. You can sit on top of a mountain or in front of your desk at work, whatever suits your lifestyle and situation. The goal is the same; escape from the daily grind, find inner peace, and lose the stress and eating.

Here’s some weight loss meditation tips to get you started. But, you might want to check out the many books on the subject and even take some classes. Practice for a few minutes, or as long as you like, there are no rules with meditation for weight loss.

----------------------HOW TO MEDITATE OPTIONS----------------------

✽ Repeat a mantra (silently or aloud.) You can even create your own mantra if you want to address a personal stress and eating situation. Mantras have been around for centuries and are the foundation of transcendental meditation. Religious mantras include a Jesus prayer in the Christian tradition, the holy name of God in Judaism, or the Om mantra of Eastern religions. Mantras take some getting used to, but they have been used for centuries and are proven stress relievers. What the heck, give it a shot.

✽ Walking / Running. Practicing how to meditate while exercising is an efficient and healthy way to relax. You can use this anywhere you're walking or running. Just slow down your pace so that you can focus on each movement of your legs, or feet, or arms. Concentrate on your body’s movement, repeating words in your mind such as “step heal toe” as you put down each foot, or simply “left-right-left-right” lifting, moving and placing your leg forward on the ground again and again. Get in the zone and think of nothing else. This is a good way to get some exercise, a mental vacation and eliminate stress related eating all at once.

✽ Breathe deep. Close your eyes (or not) and focus all attention on your breathing. Think of nothing else. Concentrate on feeling your lungs fill, and then empty of air as you inhale and exhale through your nose. Breathe deep…and slow. If your mind wanders, slowly return your focus to your breathing. Stick with it, it takes some time and practice but is well worth. If something this simple can reduce your stress and eating, you've got to give it a shot.

✽ Body scan. Again, close your eyes (I always do, but do what ever makes you comfortable) and become aware of your body's various sensations, whether it’s pain, tension, or mental stress. Start at your toes and go from one part of your body to the next until you reach you head. Breath deep…and when you exhale imagine breathing warmth and relaxation into those different parts of your body. With this weight loss meditation technique, stay on problem areas longer but do your whole body. Takes a bit more time but in the end very satisfying.

✽ Read and listen to music. Many people say they benefit from reading poems or sacred texts silently or aloud, then taking a few moments to quietly reflect on the meaning of the words. Or you can also listen any music you find relaxing or inspiring. Just take time to reflect on what you’ve read or heard. Later you can discuss your thoughts with a friend...or not. Learning how to meditate is learning how to go to another place with your thoughts, to not think about yourself.Lose yourself, and lose your stress related eating.

✽ Practice prayer. Not trying to push an agenda here, but prayer is the best known and most widely practiced example of how to meditate. You can pray using your own words or read prayers written by others. You’re just checking in with a higher power and asking for some weight loss meditation help. Can’t hurt. Try the self-help section of your local bookstore for sources or talk with your rabbi, priest, pastor or other spiritual leader about resources. I’m sure they’ll have lost of suggestions.

✽ Focus your feelings of love and gratitude. In this type of meditation, you concentrate your attention on a sacred object, being, or place, person that means a lot to you. Let the emotions of love and gratitude flow into your thoughts. Sometimes it helps to close your eyes and use your imagination; or gaze at pictures of the object, person, or place.

Lastly, give yourself a break as you practice for weight loss meditation, it takes time to get into. Your mind will wander during meditation, it doesn’t matter how long you've been practicing, it happens to the best of us. When this happens just slowly re-focus and return to the object, sensation, chant or movement you're concentrating on.

Play around and experiment, soon you'll find out what types of meditation work best for you. And never forget, there's no right way or wrong way to meditate. What matters is that weight loss meditation helps you with stress reduction, and stress related eating.

Smiles…Gigi
