Teen weight loss starts with looking at things differently.
Teen weight loss advice usually goes in one ear and out the other…we get it, you’re a teenager, it’s in your DNA to rebel and not listen to adults. But…This needs to sink in. Being over weight, fat, obese, is dangerous to your health. No joke. Do you want to get diabetes, have high blood pressure, heart problems; joint problems… the list goes on but we can guess your answer. No one wants these health problems. And no matter what anyone tells you there's no magic pill for teen weight loss, and diets are no fun at all, for anybody at any age. But there's one thing you can start doing today. Here's the mother of all teen weight loss tips: Try looking at things differently. In other words, don’t think “Lose Weight” we want you to think “Get Healthy”. This is the first step to changing your lifestyle. (Check out our tips page for more help.) Diets can be a bore, but changing your lifestyle, now that’s exciting. Because when you change your lifestyle you start doing healthy things, like exercising and eating right. And guess what, yep, you’ll start losing weight. And here’s the big bonus, a lifestyle change keeps the weight off…permanently. Just focus on practicing the behaviors that promote a healthy lifestyle and the weight will continue to naturally melt away. Your family doctor can help set realistic goals for body mass index and weight based on your age, height and general health, so talk to them. Then start. We know you’re a teenager, and responsibility / standing on your own two feet is something you're still learning, but in the end, your weight loss success is in your hands. Totally. So don't wait for someone else to lead you (those who wait, wait), do it yourself and do it now. Teen Weight Loss. EXERCISE: If you’ve been pretty inactive, start out slow but shoot for about 60 minutes of physical activity a day. But that doesn't necessarily mean 60 solid minutes at a stretch. Shorter, repeated bursts of activity during the day can help burn calories, too. Look for any excuse to move your body. Seek out the stairs, avoid escalators, and walk whenever you can. Even household chores such as vacuuming and washing the car have aerobic benefits. It all adds up to calories burned. School sports are great but if you’re not an athlete or your hesitant to participate in organized activities, that's OK. Just cut back on TV time and lay off the computer games, they’re doing nothing for your body (but you already know that). And try starting a walking plan with the goal of someday running. Again, just think “Get Healthy”. This is going to work. Teen Weight Loss. EATING: If you think skipping any meal is a good way to lose weight, think again. A nutritious meal jump-starts your metabolism and gives you the energy you need to make it through the day. Miss a meal and soon you’ll be starving and tempted to overeat on your next opportunity. So never miss a meal. We suggest 5 small meals a day. Yep, this will work, eating less, but more often is the trick. (Check out our Eating Plan for ideas.) Stay with natural, organic, fresh food whenever you can. Your body will love it. Portions. No matter what anyone says, size matters. Got to scale back and start sharing your meals, ordering a smaller portion or taking home leftovers. Just don’t feel you have to finish everything on your plate. Portions are way to big these days. Water. Fall in love with it instead of soda and other sugary drinks. You’ll save yourself hundreds of calories and a day's worth of sugar — or even more. Never forget, you’re in control with what goes into your body. But an occasional indulgence is OK. Just don’t make it a habit. Teen Weight Loss. MOTIVATION: Your self worth is not based on your weight. You have skills, accomplishments and a family that loves you. You can do anything, if you’re healthy. But if your feeling a bit down and struggling with low self-esteem, consider a support group, formal weight-control program or professional counseling. One of the more important teen weight loss tips is, always talk with your parents. They want to help you. The additional support may give you the tools to counter social pressure, cultivate more positive self-esteem and take control of your weight. Go for it. It’s worth the effort and the benefits will last a lifetime. Besides, you are so worth it.
