Herbal weight loss supplements make big promises…but do they deliver?

herbal weight loss supplements

Many herbal weight loss supplements have ingredients of questionable quality and many times contaminated, so buyer beware, the efficiency of these products is almost non-existent.

As a result a lot of people think herbal weight loss supplements are either a waste of money or just bad for you. They’ve got a point.

People who have limited clinical, scientific, or research knowledge about herbs sell most herbal preparations. They just don’t know about the potential problems and/or how these herbs affect you or the medicines you’re on.

But there are high quality herbal weight loss products out there that deliver on their promise. These products are researched and tested and by experienced scientists to insure safety and efficacy. The rub here is you have to know how to recognize them.

A couple of things to look for:

1. Avoid products claiming weight loss without lifestyle change, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Don't be suckered by pie in the sky promises, like "Lose weight while you sleep."

2. Make sure the products are manufactured in a facility that complies with the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP.) This ensures that the facility sticks to high standards of processing and manufacturing (the same standards followed by pharmaceutical companies), and guarantees that the herbal weight loss supplements contain ingredients that are pure, of therapeutic value, safe and with standardized formulas.

Here's how the different herbal weight loss supplements work:

Group 1 of herbs work to: Make the brain think your stomach is full. These herbs trigger a response in the brain that basically tricks it into thinking you’ve had enough to eat.

Group 2 of herbs work to: Rev up your system, they contain substances like caffeine that speed up body functions; you’re your heart rate, digestion, and respiration. Basically they speed up your metabolism, which helps your body burn more fat.

Group 3 of herbs work to: Act as diuretics (water reducers) by causing water weight loss. They rid your body of excess fluid; but the problem here is, when you quit taking the herb, the weight returns.

Group 4 of herbs work to: Cleanse your system out. These are herbal laxatives usually sold as a diet tea product. These herbs can cause cramping, diarrhea, and if overused, could cause your bowels to no longer function without laxative stimulation.

Also never forget, no herbal weight loss product will magically make the pounds go away over night, but they can help promote weight loss in a variety of ways.

While some herbs can be beneficial, others can be potentially dangerous and even toxic. You just need to understand how herbs, or combinations of herbs will affect your body. Everybody’s different. Become an educated consumer, you’ll insure you don’t end up with an undesired side effect.

It would also be a good idea to talk to your doctor as well. Herbal weight loss supplements may help kick start some short term weight loss goals, but the weight loss may not last unless a lifestyle change of healthy eating habits and a walking or running program have been embraced as well.
