healthy snack recipesChoosing healthy snack recipes means shopping smart, you need to take health claims on food packages with a grain of salt. They can be deceiving.

Just because something says "all natural" or "pure" doesn't mean that it's good for you. Just look at "all natural" juice drinks or sodas. These products are filled with sugar (okay, it is a natural ingredient) but all that sugar means they’re high in calories and give you little nutrition.

Here’s another snack to look over carefully. Your average granola bar, a snack that people think is healthy. Although granola bars can be a good source of certain vitamins and nutrients, many also contain a great deal of fat, including a particularly harmful type of fat called trans fat.

On average, about 35% of the calories in a regular granola bar come from fat alone. Then there’s the potential for loads of sugar in granola cereals and bars to boot. Always check the Nutrition Facts label on the package to find out what’s really going on.

Be suspicious of low-fat food claims, as well. If the fat has been eliminated or cut back, you can bet the amount of sugar in the food has probably increased to keep it tasting good. Many low-fat foods have nearly as many calories as their full-fat versions. Hard to believe, but true.

So take the claims that a food's manufacturer writes on the front of the package with a grain of salt. Read the ingredients and the nutrition information on the back label, it’s there where you’ll find out how good or bad the food really is for you.

Here's my last words on the subject (they're worth repeating). People who eat healthy snack recipes in between meals are less likely to overeat and gain weight than people who skip meals or go for long periods without eating and then gorge themselves.

So think about going with healthy snack recipes, your body is counting on you to do the right thing. Smiles...Gigi
