Health benefits of wine in the Mediterranean style diet have made the idea of “wine and health” very popular.And it’s no wonder. Researchers attributed part of the impressive low incidence of heart disease in the Mediterranean to the consumption of red wine. So if you liked the Mediterranean diet for it’s healthy heart attributes, you’re going to love this. The health benefits of wine can now include weight loss. It was recently discovered that a substance called resveratrol, found in high levels in red wine, could help individuals lose weight. It appears to be an appetite suppresser, due to its high antioxidant content, and helps to speed up your metabolism, burning off more calories. The resveratrol in red wine comes from the skin of grapes used to make wine. Because red wine is fermented with grape skins longer than is white wine, red wine contains more resveratrol. Simply eating grapes, or drinking grape juice, can be another very healthy way to get resveratrol without drinking alcohol. If you already drink red wine, enjoy the health benefits, but do so in moderation. What I’m talking about is an average of two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women. Period. Here’ some more good news. Now there’s a supplement made from resveratrol that has the potential to be a promising weight loss aid for dieters, particularly those individuals who have a lot of difficulty losing weight. But regardless of whatever supplements are developed, it is unlikely that the people of the Mediterranean will give up their red wine at meal time. Nor should they. A glass of wine at dinner has served them right for centuries. Just want to make sure we're all on the same page here.
