Unfortunately, the eating disorders statistics are probably much higher, with so many cases not reported because of the secretiveness and shame that comes with eating disorders.

I know, because I was one of them. During my "fat time" I experimented with different diets, and read enough on the subject of eating disorders to write my own book.

But, what I learned helped me recognize my own behavior and understand why I was doing it.

I was lucky, with this knowledge I eventually (didn't happen overnight) solved my overeating problem.

I hope what I've learned helps you as well.

Everybody disconnects from the daily pressures and problems of life in their own way; escaping through movies, exercise, music, drugs & alcohol. But if you have eating problems, like compulsive eating, you use food to numb all that is going on around you.

You also have to come to grips with the many surpressed mental and emotional issues associated with any food addiction: Like low self-esteem, stress, depression, feelings of worthlessness, family communication problems and an
inability to cope with emotions. All can lead to emotional eating.

Eating disorders statistics are off because often times they occur in secret. It's not uncommon for people to eat normally or restrictively in front of others and then make up for chowing down less by going on a secret binge later. Late at night, when others are asleep.

Some people even have a secret stash of junk food hidden for their personal use. Sound familiar?

People with eating disorders are constantly struggling and unhappy with their weight. I tried each new diet hoping it would be the one that works to fix my food addiction.

With some at first, there was even some weight loss success, but unfortunately, as the eating disorders statistics show, each diet eventually ended in failure.

I didn't stick with it and all the lost weight was regained (plus a few extra pounds.) Not the direction I was hoping for.

What worked for me, and enabled me to stick with it, was slowly replacing my food addictions with running as a way to deal with the stress and strain of my life.

Running gave me the confidence, strength, and inspiration to change my life style, and that's changed my life forever.

It can be harder for some than others turning the corner. Eating disorders statistics show many times food issues cannot be cured with willpower alone and professional help is needed.

You might also want to connect with one of the many "Eating Disorder Support groups" or "Food Addicts Anonymous." Lots of groups and services out there, just have to find the one right for you.
